Mishka, Husky Talking Dog, Saying "I love you" (Practice Diary)

This is a practice diary.  It serves two purposes.

I couldn't get this YouTube video to work in the comment section, in reply to Obey's pug /Batman picture.  (This video is one of the best renditions of a talking dog, that I've seen in a while.)

But, more importantly, I will use this "throw away" diary, instead of any author's "real one," when I need to practice video embeds, image uploads, etc.  (It will be the only one of its kind, that I create for this purpose.)

Hopefully, since I didn't feature it, it will be fairly inconspicuous.

Sweet Murphee

FDL "refugee"  (self-imposed, never been flagged, but figure that it's a matter of time).  FDL handle "Blue Onyx."

Just saw that Alan Maki has been banished--yikes!  (One of my favorite diarists!).

As for the odd username--it's in honor of my avatar (FDL and, hopefully, here), "Murphee," our sweet, female terrier mix that we just lost, at almost the age of 14.  Hope something that corny is OK, here.

Thanks.

Hey, Q--

Where's your sense of humor?

I think he sings pretty darn well, and I've had my share of "singing" dogs. (He talks about as well as most people, in the neck of the woods [mid-South] that I live in. )

wd and kgb--

Just so you know. This practice video was put in comment section of "unpublished" diary (dog). Two other practice videos that I put in the comment section (after unpublishing this diary) DID NOT show up in comments, on the home page.

Do not understand how this happened. Sorry. (If anyone figures it out, let me know.)

wd and kgb--

Never mind the comment section. The video of Cockburn has literally disappeared from my diary.

I used the "embed" video mechanism to set it up. So, when I saw that it was gone, went back to C-Span video archive. Appears that they have "deactivated" or removed the embed code, for this video.

I replaced it with the Santana and Rob Thomas "Smooth" video, as a "placeholder" until I could figure out how to re-install it. Let me know if you can see what's happened. It was visible and working, this morning.

Got to leave for a couple of hours. Will check back later.

Thanks--

As far as I could tell, the post still reads as Unpublished. Seems odd it's generating comments on the Recent Comments list again, and via email.

I don't see the video, either, but I never did, even in the html window. You didn't publish, unpublish it again somehow?

kgb--

A little OT.

But, got some issues with disappearing video (of Cockburn, "locked up comment sections", etc.), but the issue that I'm the most concerned about, is that the following icon has disappeared from my comment boxes (I need it, so that if I make an error, I don't need to generate a "new" comment to correct it. You just pointed it out to me, a day and a half ago, now.) But, now, the little "paper and pen" icon's gone.

Here's your and my messages, so you can see what I'm talking about:

Thank you, kgb. I didn't realize that, and it will save unnecessary "clutter" from entering corrections, in a subsequent comment box. (I hesitated making the correction, but didn't want to put out incorrect information)."

Heck--not sure why "the little icon" didn't show.

I should be able to use the "edit function" to make my corrections, if I make an error in a statistic, or fail to make a proper link, in the comment section.

Learned how to "link" a word this week, compliments of Miss wd. At this point, I don't need to practice links, anymore.

I'd appreciate it, if you could figure out what happened to the edit icon, and get it back for me. (The other issues are not pressing, just a bit puzzling.)

Thank you, in advance. Hopefully, when this (the icon) is straightened out, I should not need to take up your time again, on tech issues. :-)|

One last thing. When I click on The Latest Comments section on the Home Page, I get this message:

"404--Item Not Found"

I'm guessing that it may have something to do with the disappearance of the "edit icon."

I'm not sure what you mean by "I click on The Latest Comments section on the Home Page"

Is it giving you an error when you try to click on an individual comment? If not, what exactly (like, where on the page) are you clicking on?

Also, you should only see that edit icon for your own comments. Just double-checking to confirm that it is not there at all.

Hey. I went in to look at the Cockburn video, and now *all* embed code is gone from the post?

Do you have a link to the original C-Span page where it can be seen?

This is it; I didn't find it at the C-span video library just now, but got a hit when I googled. When I searched the archives at c-span yesterday, it did boot up; not today.

http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/Cockbu

but the embed function isn't active now.

Thanks, wd.

I guess like I told kgb, I won't worry too much about it. I don't know how to do HTML embeds, and I know that I won't be able to get the "C-Span videos" to work on the "Video" tab.

The main concern that I had, was not being able to "edit." By now, everyone here knows that the video is available at the C-Span website, so I guess they can go there to watch it. (That was really "low rent" of C-Span to remove the video embed code, at the time of Cockburn's passing.)

Thanks for all your coaching, though.

Just check FDL (had a link there, because if couldn't "embed"--unfortunately, I must have deleted the link (darn it).

Decided that a "memorium posting" deserved to look decent (with an embed), or I just wouldn't post one.

If I find one in this blog (doubt I will, since the video easily embedded for me), I'll provide it to you, so one day when you're just bored, or something, you might see what you can do.

OK, let me see if I can articulate this correctly.

When I'm looking (from main or home page) at this blog, on the R.H. Side is the comment section called The Latest Comments (everyone's, not just mine are there).

Until yesterday, I could click on my comments and read them from that page. Now, if I click on comments that are in the three (3) UNPUBLISHED diaries, I get this message:

404--Item Not Found.

I CAN read the commments from the front page that are connected to the Cockburn diary.

It was also yesterday, that I noticed that I no longer have the "edit icon" available. Still have the Green and Red tip jar icons, but NO EDIT (with paper and pen).

I'm back at the computer now. Let me know, if this does not make sense to you. And thanks.

You may have fixed the edit icon. Looks like it's popped up on the last message from me to you reference the comment section on the front page.

I hope it's fixed, now. I'll know if I receive another one, and it's available to me, I suppose.

kbg,

kgb--

Second your sentiment about corporations.

I think that you've fixed the edit icon. I was able to "edit" the message that I referred to above (added text, and it appears).

Look, I know your a super busy guy. Unless you just have time to kill, don't knock yourself out. It's a bit aggravating that I'm locked out of my comments from the main page, but it's not the end of the world.

I realize that "huckleberries" await :-)| , so please don't take more time than you can manage, on my tech problems. I'm just glad that I can edit, again.

I'll be around if you should decide to pursue the rest of this, and have a question.

Again thanks, kgb. Your are always very patient, and gracious with your time. (I really do try, and I'm sorry that I'm such a "pain in the a**." I think I've just about gotten the hand of embedding and forming a link. HTML, and/or the "Edit/Embedded Media" icon on the Visual page, are both WAY beyond my pay grade.

So for now, I'll be content to stick with the few simple things I've learn, and give you and wd a rest. ;-)|

Oh. I get it. The comments list *shouldn't* be showing comments on unpublished diaries. I think there are some situations where you can change the publishing status and the comments list does not update to hide the newly-unpublished comments (especially if Wendy did the un-publish and you didn't refresh).

Long story short - if you try to *read* anything related to an unpublished diary - the system will report the dairy does not exist.

I changed a few things this morning and made a new category called "practice articles" that I put this post in. Then I was able to publish it without having it appear on the article lists - but we can still read and comment on the diary.

Is this the practice diary? I'm...lost.

I haven't checked lately to see if he'd responded, so it may take some time.

(I'll get back to you on the videos you sent later--thanks.)

Do me a favor, if you will. I didn't receive an e-mail for this practice diary, on my phone or my computer, so I'm not sure why you have.

But, for now, I'll suspend practicing on this diary (while it sends message to front page), but please don't try to unpublish it, etc. I think that the loss of edit function may have been connected to changing the status of this diary, (from published to unpubished) yesterday.

And, I really need to maintain the ability to "edit" my comments. I should be able to get by pretty well, using edit, now. (i just did the "test" to see for myself, if the comment was hidden, or went to the front section).

Anyway, don't worry, for now, I won't be shooting out more "tests" from this diary. Does that sound like a plan, to you?

I won't touch your diaries again, but kgb can just turn off my emails so you can go ahead. That last one's on the comment list; I'd thought your practice ones wouldn't be, as in Unpublished, so I might just have it wrong. Seems that it's silly to have the whole list taken up with them, but that's just me.

Wendy is set as an administrator who gets an email notification on *every* comment made. It doesn't apply to you (but, I'll bet Reality Checker is questioning his request to get them too about now).

[And Wendy: There isn't an easy way to add a rule that would block some comment notifications selectively.]

I have the comments from the "practice diaries" appearing on the front page on purpose (so I notice them). I might change that long-term, but short term - it's a feature, not a bug.

Thanks for explaining that to me.

The truth is, that the only little function (inserting a picture in the "comment section") is all that I have left to learn, to suit my purpose, here. If I can just do that, I'll be finished with needing a "remedial" diary, if you will.

I've already thought about using the practice diary, along with the edit function, so that the numbers of comments will be greatly reduced, as I try to learn that one last function (that I really need to know).

Would that work for everyone? I can always delay doing that, anyway. It's the only function that I haven't gotten to work for me, thus far.

SM: you can usually choose an image size for the image embed. This is 500 x 3**:

Too big; but there are lots of sizes for most images, even on personal flickr photostreams.

It is published under "practice diaries". Comments work as normal (so we can use them to provide support without taking other threads off topic), but it doesn't appear on any of the articles lists.

As for the CP comment thing ... what the program is doing is a pretty big no-no in the technical world. Johan totally knows this ... that's why it is available only on a membership basis. Right now, a blog-roll link here would take our readers to somewhere that didn't work without registration. I think it would be best to wait until it gets up and rolling and they can contact CounterPunch to get permission and actually go public with the site.

I'm totally hip on recruiting participants for the commenting project here though (a bit too busy to play there myself at the moment).

Gotcha. Once I finally got in, and finally got more than a third of a CP page with no commenting functions, it seemed there was no way to know which posts were getting action. It was all pretty confusing, not to mention that I'm not much of a commenter, really.

Oh. One other thing. The easiest way to embed you-tube videos in comments is to click on the You-Tube button and paste *ONLY* the video id.

For example, to embed the video found at:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDBlXGla33w

you would enter just "EDBlXGla33w" when the YouTube popup asks "enter text" ... and it comes out like this:
